The watch that brought me back
For the longest time I couldn’t find any watch on the modern Panerai collection that interested me. I would go and scroll through the Panerai web site and nothing would catch my eye, or would get me to click and to explore more. It felt as if the brand is completely disconnected from planet earth, its roots, its paneristi community and from reality. I didn’t feel it, and not feeling it pissed me off.
If I ever saw something that picked some interest, it was targeted at the wrists of four year old kids. It’s not that I do not understand that a 47mm watch is not trending anymore, but that is the historic Panerai watch size, and that size fits my large wrist . I also felt that the pricing took a hike, and it seemed as someone at the brand believed everyone are stupid to pay the MSRP for some of these watches. Long gone the days when a brand new special edition PAM 00721 costed $9,800, which was also a hefty price tag back in 2018.
Then came the Luminor Marina Militare PAM 05218. The first time for a long time that I actually liked something coming from Panerai. A modern reissue based on the historic Pre-Vendôme Luminor Marina Militare Ref. 5218-202/A, that was originally released in September of 1993.
Unlike the other 1993 references (the 5218-201/A and Mare Nostrum 5218-301/A), which launched Panerai into the civilian market, the original 5218-202/A, if I am not mistaken, was produced in extremely small quantities specifically for Italian Navy personnel, making it one of the rarest "grail" Pre-V references.
The 5218 reference retains the classic 44mm "Bettarini" case profile of the original, now using DLC instead of PVD. True to the original 5218-202/A, it features a single-layer engraved/hollowed matte black dial with recessed numerals rather than Panerai’s modern sandwich dial structure. The PAM 05218 intentionally recreates the ‘non-matching hands’ anomaly of the original 1993 batch, where a chemical reaction between tritium and dial varnish caused the numerals to age into an orange-brown shade while the hands remained greenish. Finally, it uses redrawn vintage typography for the "MARINA MILITARE" text, a 300m depth rating, and comes paired with a golden-brown calf strap featuring a sewn-in trapezoidal DLC buckle.
My heart sunk the first time I laid my eyes on the watch. It was perfect. What else can you ask? A faithful recreation of one of the most sought after Panerai models of the past. It was love at first sight. I got those goosebumps again and it allowed me to renew some of my faith in the brand, and to finally purchase a Panerai watch after all these years.
